Infinity Mirror

One Saturday I began designing and constructing a three panel infinity mirror.  I began by taking three octagon shaped windows and removing the glass from them.  The first technique to creating the infinite illusion is to bronze the glass.  This is the technique that allows light to enter through a window but refracted when trying to exit.  This is often referred to as a one way mirror.

After bronzing the glass I drilled 24 symmetrical holes equidistant from the glass pane and the back of the window.  One led light was placed in each of the 24 holes in each of the three windows and then were spliced together to create one outlet.

The box was created from two six foot by 24 inch sheets of 5/8" plywood.  In addition to the windows 2x4 cross braces were placed on the upright edges to provide structure while plywood sheets were cut to create the finished top and the front ledge.

Trim was added around the front edges to help provide a level of finish and hide screw holes and tacking points.  The back piece and most important piece was a six foot by 24" mirror slid into grooves cut on the top and bottom pieces of plywood.  Added to the mirror was black weatherstripping to provide as air tight of a seal as possible to prevent light from escaping the box.

In addition to the led lights housed by the mirrors I installed three puddle lights on the underside of the box to provide for ambient light and illuminate glass ware and bottles on the bar top.

the total project took about one week to complete as I worked several hours each night.
