Kitchen Remodel

Beginning in May of 2009 I began remodeling the kitchen of a 100 year old home in Indianola Iowa.  The kitchen was part of a north annex of the house added in the 1930's that also contained a mud room and 3/4 bath as well as access to the driveway and stairs to the basement.

With the help of my father and a couple of friends we began by removing the wall that divided the kitchen (originally 15 x 11) and the mud room (originally 7x5).  After removing that wall the next project was to level the floors between the two rooms and remove the east facing screen and glass exterior wall of the mud room and replace the exterior door and added a studded and more importantly insulated wall.

Next all existing plaster walls were removed to provide access to the electrical, which was re-run.  Prior to placing new sheet-rock, insulation was added to the other exterior walls, and the door to the bathroom was turned, from opening to the kitchen near the stove, to the newly connected east section of the kitchen near the east door.

The shower was removed from the bathroom, and the toilet was moved to the old shower location and a new vanity was installed.

In addition to redoing the walls, the drop ceiling was also removed up to the rafters of the attic and the ceiling was leveled using sections of plywood, shims and new boards where needed and a sheet-rock ceiling was put in place with new insulation added to the kitchen.  The other major step to the remodel was to remove the lament floor and sub floor, and replace with a new sub floor and a finished pine hardwood floor that matched the original wood visible throughout the rest of the house.

Cabinets, a new stove, the addition of a dishwasher and garbage disposal were added.  Total project took one year of three nights a week and most Saturdays.
